Getting Ready
Being well-prepared before you travel to Europe or welcome your exchange partner into your home will help make your experience more enjoyable for everyone
Here are some helpful tips to make your exchange experience as smooth as possible:
Avoid overpacking - remember you will have access to laundry
Ask in advance if you will have access to any larger items such as skis or musical instruments instead of travelling with them
Take the time to research the school and community you will be residing in when you travel
Share your interests with your partner. Make sure you ask the same of them. Try to plan at least three activities that you can each participate in together
Establish the best times and days to connect with your family and friends back home. Keep in mind that there is a six-hour time change. Creating a schedule will give everyone something to look forward to while at the same time allowing you to focus on your exchange experience
Maintain a healthy sleep pattern
Take time before you leave to develop your language skills in your host language, including:
Watching movies with English subtitles so you can hear how the words are pronounced
Listening to music
Read articles, magazines, books
Setting up your phone with the corresponding keyboard
Downloading a language app
THE BEST TIP OF ALL: Talk! Do not be afraid of making mistakes. The more you practice speaking, the better you will get!
